Larry Arthur Baker, age 86, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026.
Larry was born on September 23, 1939, in Shawano, Wisconsin, to his parents, Hugo Baker and Viola Baker (nee Themer).
Larry was a graduate of Shawano high school. He did his undergraduate work at Ripon College, UW-Stevens Point and his graduate work at UW-Madison. He spent most of his career in the paper industry and retired as a senior vice president for Wausau Papers.
Larry met his future wife in high school, though their love story truly began during their college years. He was fortunate to share his life with his loving spouse,Virginia Pierre, and together they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage. Their union was blessed with four children: Betsy, Brad, Stuart, and Becky.
Larry lived a full and active life, always eager to be involved in anything he could contribute to. A natural leader with a strong will, he served as an active member-and often president-of numerous organizations and associations. He was a man of faith and a devoted member of his church, attending Lutheran congregations both in his hometown and at his vacation home in Florida.
He had a deep love for the outdoors and found great joy in boating, spending time on the water, and being in the woods hunting. Larry especially cherished time with his family, often hosting his famous “cocktails cruises” and enjoying snowmobiling adventures. Many memories were made at the family lake home in Minocqua, Wisconsin, where he was a master griller and proudly cheered on his favorite team, the Green Bay Packers. He also held a special place in his heart for his loyal dog, Murphy.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Baker; his son Brad (Barbara) Baker and their children, Christian (Megan) and Mary Gwen; his son Stuart (Tracy) Baker and their five children; Isabella, Lily, Francesca, Quinn, and Zachary; and his daughter Becky (James) Kik and their daughter, Emma. He is also survived by his great-grandson, Barrett, son of Christian and Megan Baker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugo and Viola Baker; his sister, Donna (Ken) Martzke; and his daughter, Betsy.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026 at 11:00 at Ascensions Lutheran Church with Pastor Pete Warmanen officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Ascension Lutheran Church PO Box 940, Minocqua, WI 54548 or Nashoba Learning Group, Attn Lauren Dorn, 10 Oak Park Drive, Bedford, MA 01730 in memory of Larry Baker.
