Larry James (Butch) Engel, age 78, of Traverse City, Michigan, (formerly of East Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Sturgis and Petoskey Michigan) passed away Monday evening, November 27, 2023 at a wonderful care facility not far from his Traverse City home. He passed peacefully with his wife Lisa of almost 38 years, by his side. Larry married Lisa on March 22, 1986 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At that time, Larry was a new and used car dealer in Sturgis, Michigan. Prior to that he owned and operated Engel Imports in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Since retiring from the car business, Larry along with Lisa, have owned a seasonal shoe store in Leland, Michigan.
Larry loved God, his wife and family, first and foremost, and then all things cars, boats, business, track and football. His cocker spaniels through the years gave him countless hours of joy. Two-pound lobster tails in Sarasota ranked right up there as well.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife, Lisa (Shinn) Engel as well as his children; James Bowdie Engel, Lawrence Shelby (Heather) Engel, Allie Catherine (Keary) Sawyer and his daughter with Lisa; Blakley Danielle (Bradley) Greiner. He also leaves behind his beloved nine grandchildren, Nick, Avery, Cameron, Ethan and Noah Engel, Nate Cruz, Colton Sawyer and Reilly and Maddilyn Sullivan.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; Carl D. Engel and Grace Catherine (Johnson) Engel.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caring staff of Hospice of Michigan for their gentle care and compassion for Larry. They are also grateful for Trevor, a CNA at MediLodge in Suttons Bay. Trevor was so kind, gentle and respectful in caring for Larry's physical needs, even after his passing.
A private service for Larry took place on Friday, December 1, 2023.
