Larry J. Smith "Smitty" was born on June 1, 1947 to Grace (Gary) Smith and George V. Smith. He attended Bertha Vos Elementary School, then St. Francis Catholic High School in Traverse City, from where he graduated.
In his early years, Larry enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout the Acme area.
Larry served our country in the Army from 1966-1969. He attended basic training at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri and Advanced Training at Fort Ord, California. He was stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska during his three years in the service where he was assigned to the 123rd Infantry Division.
Larry subsequently worked at the Traverse City State Hospital from 1969-1987, at which time the hospital closed.
He owned and managed several rental properties in the Traverse City area. In addition, he was partners in operating G&L Tree Service for a number of years.
He leaves a brother, George V. Smith, and two sisters, Betty Hullet and Carol (Gary) Flickinger. He was predeceased by his parents.
He was a life-long partier and partied with many people throughout the Traverse City and Florida areas. He was fond of gaming and spent time enjoying the casino.
Memorial contributions in Larry's honor may be directed to the family in care of the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
Visitation will take place on Monday July 27, 2020 from 10:00-10:30am at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home, followed immediately by a Funeral Mass at 11:00am at St. Francis Catholic Church, and a graveside service with proper Military Honors at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
Larry and his family are being cared for by the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
