Lars Sloan

Lars Nathan Sloan, 68, passed away November 14th, 2022. He was born August 26th, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late Gerda and Rinehart Sloan.

Lars resided in Traverse City, Michigan, formerly Houston, Texas and Royal Oak, Michigan.

Lars was a man of many talents, most notably, a renowned piper. He began bagpipe lessons at the age of 8 and was a band member of the St. Andrews Pipe Band in Detroit. Lars founded the Hamilton Pipe Band in Houston. He was co-founder of the Celtic music group, Clandestine, and co-founder of the Houston Police Department Pipe Band. Lars joined the Celtic band, The Rogues, where his talent and influence helped propel the band. The Rogues received six Grammy Award nominations for two of the six albums recorded during Lars' time with the band. He also composed bagpipe tunes, some of which were recorded by The Rogues. Lars was CEO of American Bagpiper. He was also a special effects coordinator in the motion-picture industry and helped create scenes in movies such as Apollo 13, Tin Cup, A Perfect World and television series Walker, Texas Ranger. For 10 years prior to retiring to Northern Michigan, Lars was employed as a data management specialist with Ion Geophysical Services.

Throughout his lifetime, Lars carried with him his love of all music. He was a gifted musician and entertainer. Lars will be remembered as kind-hearted and fun-loving.

Lars is survived by his daughter, Carleigh Taylor Seaborn (Luke Seaborn), his sisters, Glynnis Price and Romy Sloan Anderson (Howard Anderson), his nephew, Cullen Anderson and niece, Carys Anderson.

As per his wishes, Lars' ashes will be cast into West Bay in Traverse City, Michigan.
