Lawrence J. Kuemin, 97, of Traverse City, died Thursday, September 25, 2014 at his home.
Larry was born on September 2, 1917 to the late Casimir and Bertha (Kaltenbach) Kuemin, Bingham Township, Leelanau County. He married the former Phyllis Bova on September 4, 1948 in Traverse City. Larry served our country in WW II as an airplane mechanic in the U. S. Army Air Corp, having been stationed in the Southwest Pacific.
A machinist at Sheffer Collett, Larry had been employed with the company for 37 years before retiring in 1982. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the U. A. W. and the Cherryland VFW Post 2780. Larry was a very caring person who enjoyed golf, bowling, playing euchre and was a fantastic story teller.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Phyllis; his children Rick and Chris Kuemin, Jim and Gwen Kuemin, Jeanne and Bill Rokos and Tom and Debbie Kuemin. Also surviving are his grandchildren Nancy Kuemin and Serdar Yonak, Nicole and Scott Drews, Angelika and Miro Szygula, Arthur and Amy Kuemin, Kyle and Amy Rokos, Jill and Jason Gilmore, Annie and Robert Lothschutz, Carly and Bob Smith, Michael and Rebekah Kuemin and great grandchildren, Sabine, Nathan, Aryne, Gavin, Rachel, Sebastian, Millie, Malachi, Brody, Reece, Remy, Nicholas, Audrey, Lily, Casimir, Roan and Nora. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Frances Oscar and a sister Cecilia who died in infancy.
Visitation will take place Sunday, Sept. 28 from 2-4 pm at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, also at the funeral home, with Deacon Rene Hoenscheid officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Honor Guard of VFW Post 2780.
