TRAVERSE CITY — Leona Margaret Stye, 95, of Traverse City, formerly of Detroit and Indian River, was welcomed into the loving arms of her Lord early Wednesday morning, Jan. 26, 2011, at Grand Traverse Pavilions, following a lingering illness.Born Oct. 30, 1915, in Detroit, she was the daughter of the late Leo J. and Tillie (Papciak) Mallock. On April 6, 1940, in Detroit, she married George Stye, who preceded her in death in 1988. While living in the Detroit area, Leona worked as an office clerk for General Motors for 40 years. She was a longtime member of St. Francis Catholic Church, where she enjoyed interacting with others. Leona fought her recent illness as she lived her life, with strength and dignity. She will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to know her.Leona is survived by two sisters, Marion Willmarth, of Sterling Heights, and Jean MacKillip, of Allen Park; caregivers and special friends, Fred Szczpanski and Bill Thompson, both of Traverse City; along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends.In addition to her husband, Leona was also preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Fournier and Beatrice Marsh; and a brother and sister-in-law, Leo and Ilene Mallock.Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday, Jan. 28, 2011, from 2 to 8 p.m., where a Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be offered at St. Francis Catholic Church on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Fr. Kenneth Stachnik will serve as the celebrant. Burial will take place at Indian River Catholic Shrine at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Francis Food Pantry.
