Obituary

INTERLOCHEN — Former Chief Engineer at Interlochen Public Radio, Leroy Dow "L. D." Greilick, 79, of Interlochen, died at his home among family on Dec. 13, 2010. Born Feb. 22, 1932, in Brooksville, Fla., he was the son of the late Leroy Clarence and Anne (Hathaway) Greilick. L. D. has a long history in broadcast engineering. As a teenager he worked as a television transmitter engineer for Les Biederman's Paul Bunyan Network in Traverse City. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, L. D. worked in Broadcast Services at Interlochen and was Interlochen's first Chief Engineer for radio in 1963. In 1970 he took a job at Traverse City radio station WCCW, but returned to Interlochen in 1983 to serve again as broadcast and recording engineer. He retired from Interlochen in 1998 and until very recently had worked as a volunteer for Interlochen Public Radio, accompanying Chief Engineer Jack Conners to transmitter sites for maintenance and repair.Known to his friends as "The great and powerful L. D.", he was sharp with wit and humor, and a genius in the field of electronics. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.L. D. is survived by his children, Christina Anne Greilick, of Traverse City, Michael (Rachel) Greilick, of Traverse City, John Ivan Greilick, of Traverse City, Amy (Tom) Wurdock, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Laura Danielle Greilick, of Traverse City; grandchildren; siblings, Donald E. (Robely) Greilick, Kathleen Cook and Randy "C.J." Greilick, all of Pine Island, Fla.; and his good friend, Jack Conners, of Traverse City.A memorial gathering is being planned for a later date.
