Obituary

LeRoy "Lee" Hayes, 73, passed away peacefully at his home on March 26, 2026.

Born on May 14, 1952, Lee lived a life marked by quiet strength, steady devotion, and a surprisingly sharp sense of humor for someone who often preferred the peace of solitude.

Lee had a strong passion for his homestead and enjoyed the calm and warmth of the outdoors. He tended to his yard with the precision of a man who took pride in every blade of grass. He pruned the trees. He cherished the wildlife around him. He built havens for birds, squirrels and deer on his property. He appreciated witnessing all of nature through the seasons. This was his reverence, his worship.

In his earlier years, Lee was a skilled woodworker, creating several gifts for loved ones. Mechanically inclined, he had a devoted interest in building motorcycles and loved touring the countryside. Lee also enjoyed fishing and golf. He was a team player on many leagues – softball, blooper ball and euchre.

Lee found joy in music and good company. On warm afternoons, you could often find him relaxing in the shade, a cold beer in hand, the radio playing in the background as he chatted with neighbors. He loved being outdoors, whether he was riding his tractor or cruising the neighborhood in his trusty golf cart—making his rounds like the unofficial mayor of the community. And if a friend happened to stop by, he was always ready to share a beer, a story, and a good laugh.

What many will remember most is Lee's love of telling jokes. His humor wasn't loud or flashy; it was clever, subtle, and perfectly timed. He had a way of slipping in a one‑liner or telling a great story that eventually led to a hilarious punchline. Even on the toughest days, Lee's jokes brought smiles, reminding everyone that laughter was one of life's most reliable comforts.

Above all, Lee held a deep, unwavering love for his family, his "girls". His wife, Jill, and his daughters, Angela and Jennifer, were the center of his world. His pride in them was unmistakable, and his devotion to them remains a lasting testament to the man he was.

The family would like to thank all the staff at the Cowell Family Cancer Center. They had a way of putting a smile on LeRoy's face even on the worst days. Your loving care and kindness over the past year will always be remembered.

Private services will be held on a future date. Lee was tired of the snow, and a small ceremony will be planned for the warmer months.

Honoring Lee's love for radio, contributions can be directed to his favorite stations WNMC Radio or Interlochen Public Radio .
