THE VILLAGES, FL. - Leslie Clifford Spiers, 87, of The Villages, Florida, passed away on Sept. 9, 2015. Leslie was born on July 6, 1928, in Detroit, to the late Howard Wilfred and Jeanette Summers (Pert) Spiers.
He graduated from Mackenzie High School in 1945. In1946 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and honorably served his country in Chinhae, Korea, with the 1st Field Artillery as a radio technician and repairman until 1948.
Leslie married the late Margaret Armstrong on July 13, 1951 in Detroit. The couple had three sons and celebrated 50 years of marriage at her passing in 2001.
He graduated from Wayne State earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and later a master's degree from the University of Michigan. He taught at Mackenzie High School and later at Henry Ford Community College until retiring in 1985.
In 2004 Leslie met Barbara Storey, of Traverse City, Michigan, and the couple relocated to their home in The Villages, Florida, where he was active in his church and community and traveled extensively.
He was a wonderful, giving man who enjoyed spending time with is family and friends and playing golf, bingo, pinochle, and tooling around the The Villages in his beloved golf cart, delivering meals to homebound seniors until his diagnosis of cancer this year.
Leslie is survived by his sons, William (Mary) Spiers, of Fairbanks, Alaska, James (Karan) Spiers, of Allen Park, and Mark (Dorinda) Spiers, of Traverse City; grandchildren, Timothy, Jill, Robert, John, Roberta and Susan; six great-grandchildren; and brother, James Alan (Elaine) Spiers, of Traverse City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret (2001); brother, Howard Spiers (2001); and grandson, Christopher Spiers (2011).
A memorial service will be held for family and friends at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with visitation held one hour prior. Internment will follow the service at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions in Leslie's name may be directed to "home bound" in care of North Lake Presbyterian Church, 975 Rolling Acres, Lady Lake, FL. 32159; and the American Cancer Society.
