Letha "Letty" Cairns, 80, passed from this life on August 2, 2024. Born on December 4th, 1943, in Detroit, MI, to Vincent V. and Althea M. (Noll) Van Laan.

Letha dedicated her professional life to the field of education, serving as a teacher, reading consultant, and principal for Warren Consolidated Schools for many years. Her commitment to her students and colleagues was unwavering, and she left a lasting impact on the community.

Letha loved her husband, George. Married for 42 years, Letha and George shared an extraordinary bond, doing everything together. They enjoyed hosting elegant dinner parties, with Thanksgiving being particularly memorable. Their love for travel took them to various destinations where they embraced skiing, frequenting Boyne Mountain in their earlier days and later, Aspen. They never missed an opportunity to go sailing or boating, sharing a mutual love for the water.

Family was at the heart of Letty's life. She always looked forward to attending family gatherings, especially during the holidays. Known for giving the most thoughtful gifts - wrapped to perfection – she had a connection with everyone in her life.

Letty enjoyed a variety of hobbies and activities. She loved reading a good novel, sunning at the beach, painting, and gardening. She was a dedicated member of The Friendly Garden Club of Traverse City.

Letha is survived by her nieces and nephews: Susan, Karyn, Eric, Julie, Neil, Matthew, and Joshua. She is also survived by her stepdaughters Lisa and Linda, and their children, Olivia, Beatriz (Blake), and Chloe.

Letha was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 42 years, George. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Penny, Marcia, Mark, and Kirk, and by her stepdaughter, Julie.

A visitation for Letha will be held on August 16th, 2024 beginning at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, 308 N Cedar St, Traverse City MI, 49684. A funeral Mass will take place at 11:00am with a luncheon to follow. Letha will be laid to rest with George at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date.
