Obituary

Lewis "Lew" Raymond Waters, 86, of Traverse City passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Traverse Victorian Senior Living. Lew was born on December 10, 1928 in Fort Wayne, IN to the late Raymond and Audrey (Biddle) Waters. He was married to Charlene Payne on February 22, 1953 in Detroit. She preceded him in death on January 17, 2008. Lew had been employed as a Typographer with Detroit News, retiring in 1991 after 35 years of service. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Lew was a very talented basketball player. He played for the Army and semi-professional basketball for the Fort Wayne Putts. Later he was on the, gold medal winning, U.S.A. Men's Senior Olympic Basketball team. Lew was an avid reader; he had a great sense of humor and enjoyed coaching his son's basketball teams.

Lewis is surviving by his two sons; Roger (Donna) Waters of Charlevoix and Robert Waters of Traverse City. Also surviving are five grandchildren; Richard, Amber, James, Karie and Jeremy as well as a sister, Adoria Sharp.

He was preceded in death by a son, Russell Waters and a daughter, Linda Caudill.

In accordance with Lewis' wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial donation to the Traverse City Area District Library.
