Obituary

Logan Hay Schlipf, 94, died surrounded by his family on Thursday December 22, 2022 at his home in Old Mission, Michigan. He was born June 7, 1928, in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Albert C. Schlipf and Alice (Hay) Schlipf.

Survivors include his sister, Margaret Van Meter, a nephew, Andy Van Meter of Springfield, two nieces: Alice Wolfe of Old Mission, Michigan and Ann Van Meter of Northfield, Illinois, and their children: Matthew (Mackenzie) Wolfe of Nashville, Tennessee; William Wolfe of Boston, Massachusetts; Samantha Mohn of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Libby Mohn of Monterrey, California.

Logan's unusual Christian name traces its origin to his grandfather's grandfather, Stephen T. Logan, who was Abraham Lincoln's second law partner. Logan was a resident of Springfield, Illinois and Old Mission, Michigan for all of his life. He graduated from Springfield High School, Northwestern University and California Technological Institute where he earned an advanced degree in electric engineering. Immediately following his graduate studies in 1952 he began full time employment in the engineering department at Springfield's Sangamo Electric Company and soon migrated to the new field of computer science. After the merger of Sangamo into the Schlumberger Company, Logan was among the last employees to leave when Schlumberger closed its doors in Springfield in 1978. Rather than move with the company Logan then worked as a systems analyst for Southern Illinois University until his retirement in 1995.

Logan was an Deacon of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, a Rotarian, a member of the Board of Directors of the original Illinois National Bank, and a supporter of many other civic causes, including the Old Mission Athletic Association for young people's activities, but his life long passion was the Boy Scouts which he served as Eagle Scout, Scout Master, recipient of the Silver Beaver award, and for more than a quarter of a century as a member of the Council Board of Directors. For more than forty years, during the winter months, he taught swimming and lifesaving skills to thousands of Sangamon area youth. Assisting young people to accomplish their goals brought him his greatest joy.

His family will hold private graveside services at The Fancy Creek Cemetery and a public celebration of his life at the Old Mission Christian Church in Old Mission, Michigan, at 11:30 AM on Saturday July 1.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Abraham Lincoln Council, BSA.

Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, Michigan, is handling arrangements.
