Loraine Doris Austin passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025.
She was born in Detroit, Michigan, on May 8, 1929, to Theresa (Rohn) and Paul Barnowski. She attended St. Stephen Lutheran School and graduated from Southwestern High School in Detroit.
On June 23, 1950, at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Detroit she married her wonderful and caring mate, Donald Dee Austin, Jr. Together they raised three wonderful, Christian children – John (the late Kathy), David (Kelly) and Amy (Francisco).
Loraine loved her family, family get-togethers, cooking and baking. She was a competitive Euchre player and was renowned in her neighborhood and church for her pies and cookies.
She and her family were active members of Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Birmingham, Michigan for many years. For retirement, Loraine and Don moved to Leelanau County where they enjoyed residing on Lake Leelanau and their church family of 30 years at Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City. There, she served the church's Dorcas Society, Quilters and Greeters; as well as participating in Bible classes, Couples Club and helping with church fundraising activities like the annual Cookie and Rummage sales.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Don, who went to his heavenly home on December 7, 2013, after 63 years of marriage.
There are two grandchildren, Ben and Kayla; four great grandchildren, John, Levi, Lyla and Harvey; along with nieces and nephews.
Visitation and service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church (1003 S. Maple St., Traverse City) on Saturday, August 9, 2025; with visitation at 1:00 p.m. and the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. A light reception will immediately follow the service to celebrate Loraine's life. After the reception, burial will take place at Bingham Township Cemetery, located on the west side of South Center Highway (County Road 633) between E. Lakeview Hills Road and E. Bingham Road in Leelanau County.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church and if desired, to honor Loraine's many years of service, specifically to the Dorcas Society at Trinity
