Traverse City - Loraine Elizabeth Wallace, 95, of Traverse City passed away May 8, 2018 at Orchard Creek.
Loraine was born on October 14, 1922 at the family home in Detroit. She was the second daughter of Frederick Emerson and Corine Minerva (Brown) Turner. She was raised alongside her siblings, Margaret, Alan and Virginia in Detroit.
She served our country honorably as a member of the United States Navy during WWII as a Pharmacist's Mate, Second Class. She served aboard the USNTS, based out of the Bronx in New York and the USNH, based out of St. Albans, New York.
After returning home from the service, she and her neighbor Ronald P. Wallace started dating. After just three dates the two were engaged. They married on August 20, 1946.
Loraine earned her Master's Degree from Wayne State University. She was a school librarian and retired from the Frost Junior High in 1980. She and Ron decided to move up North and enjoyed four years of retirement and travel before Ron passed away in 1984. Although she missed Ron terribly, she remained a wonderful mom and grandma. She travelled around the United States and Canada with her family. She loved visiting libraries to do genealogical research while on vacation. She was president of the Grand Traverse Genealogical Society and was a devoted Member of the Daughters of The American Revolution, where she served as Past Regent as well as Lineage Chariman. Above all else, she cherished her time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a devoted enthusiast to NASCAR and the Indy 500 holding stats on many drivers.
Loraine is survived by her daughter Catherine Collins of Grawn, son Philip (Michele) Wallace of Florida; grandchildren Matthew Wallace of Florida, James (Jennifer) Collins of Traverse City and Michelle (Craig) Schueller of Traverse City; great grandchildren Hannah, Ryan, Nick, Maddy, Elizabeth, Jake and Bobby.
Loraine was preceded in death by her husband Ronald, an infant son Ross McKenzie and her siblings Margaret, Alan and Virginia.
A gathering will be held on Monday May 14, 2018 at 11:00am with visitation one hour prior at the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Full military honors will be presented.
Loraine will be laid to rest next to her parents, husband and son at the Roseland Park Cemetery in Detroit.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
