Lori Helen Commins, 68, of Cedar, Michigan, peacefully passed away on November 17, 2023, at the Munson Hospice House.

Lori was born on April 13, 1955 in Traverse City, MI to the late Keith and Virginia (Rosinski) Commins. She was a graduate of Glen Lake Schools in 1973. She was a proud veteran, serving in the Air Force and specializing in K9 handling. She then graduated from Northern Michigan University. Later she earned her master's degree from The University of Arizona.

Her professional journey led her to a distinguished career with the US Marshals Service in Washington, DC for 14 years and Detroit, MI for 12 years. Just some of her many accomplishments included being the first female on the Michigan SWAT Team, being accepted to the Special Operations Group and finishing her career as the Chief Deputy for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Upon returning home to Cedar after her retirement, Lori dedicated her time working at the YMCA, forging cherished friendships with coworkers and members alike. She loved all animals, especially cats, spending her spare time and resources rescuing and fostering as many as she could. This would come to include all her feline companions at home, whom she adored.

Lori is survived by her sister, Kateri "Kit" (Ron) Novak of Cedar; her nieces K.C. (Tim) Johnson, Hannah (Phil) Venema, great nieces Sloane and Gwen Johnson, all of Grand Rapids; and her Godson Christopher Hylton of South Carolina. She is also survived by her Uncle John (Dort) Rosinski, Uncle Fran (Helen) Rosinski and numerous cousins, extended family and friends. Additionally, the family would like to give special acknowledgement to her best friend and caregiver Cindy Lambert.

In leiu of flowers, donations can be made in Lori's honor to TC Paw, Cherryland Humane Society, PIMEUSA.org or any local no-kill animal rescue of your choice.
