TRAVERSE CITY — The famiy and friends of Louis Govatos mourn his passing at the age of 99.He leaves his daughter Sandra Karaganis, his son-in-law Joseph, two grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Irene, his wife of 65 years, preceded him in death two years ago. Louis was born in Gadsten, Ala., in 1912. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota. During WWII, he served in the Coast Guard in the Pacific theater. After the war, he returned to teaching and to the University of Michigan, where he earned his Ph.D. Western Michigan University became his home for many years. While there, he taught educational psychology, human growth and development and other courses related to teaching and research. Retirement from WMU led him to Traverse City where he and Irene enjoyed family and friends. In recent years they lived in Naples, Fla. Louis was known for his quiet and thoughtful manner. He deeply loved his family and they returned his affection. Sadly, Louis did not live to be 100 as he had hoped, but all who knew him are grateful for the many years shared with him. A visitation will take place on Thursday, April 14, between the hours of 4 and 6:30 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A religious service will be conducted at the Archangel Gabriel Mission Orthodox Church in Traverse City on Friday, April 15, at noon. A reception will follow at the Elks Club.
