Louise Elizabeth Kane, age 95 years, died on Monday, April 22, 2024, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan.
Louise was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on September 25, 1928, the daughter of Joseph C. and Agnes (Wacha) Rode. She was a graduate of the 1946 class at Catholic Central High School, attended Aquinas College in Grand Rapids: and was a graduate of the NMC School of Nursing in Traverse City. She was employed for 23 years at Munson Medical Center as a surgical nurse (retiring in 1987.)
Louise was married in Grand Rapids on May 7, 1949 to Joseph P. Kane (deceased May 3, 1989). In 1950 Louise and Joseph moved to Traverse City where they raised their 5 children. After her husband's death, Louise was married in Belding on January 9, 1993 to
R. Michael Feuerstein (deceased March 8, 1994.)
After retirement from Munson, Louise became a certified literacy tutor for the Grand Traverse Literacy Council where she volunteered for 25 years, also serving on the Board of Directors. Most of her tutoring assignments were working with adults learning ESL, (English as a Second Language.)
She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and a Eucharistic Minister. She also knitted for the Health Ministry Shawl Program, Safe Harbor and Traverse City High School.
Louise's other interests included genealogy research and world travel. She was a writer of fiction and non-fiction books. She also volunteered for many United Way Programs.
Surviving are one son, Thomas (Jean) Kane; two daughters; Teresa (Joseph) DeBella and Barbara (Robert McGinley) Kane; grandchildren; Cassalyn (Aaron) Spangler,
Christopher (Rachel) Ouellette and Angela DeBella; great-grandsons; Jack Ouellette and Gabe Ouellette; one brother, Joseph (Gania) Rode; one sister, Barbara Bonham; brother-in-law George Boonstra, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, her two previous husbands, her daughter, Mary (Kane) Franczek and her son, Michael Kane. Also, her sisters, Frances Boonstra, Carolyn Shields and brother-in-law Melvin Bonham.
Honoring Louise's request cremation has taken place with private interment at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Francis Church at a later date.
