Lucile Rose (Schwind) Lickteig, 97, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side. We know she was greeted at the gates of heaven by her savior Jesus Christ, his blessed mother Mary, and quickly ran into the arms of her beloved husband Joe and son Martin for hugs and kisses!
Lucile was born on a hot summer day, July 9, 1925, in the parlor at the Schwind family homestead on M72 West, the penultimate child of Emma (Thum) and William Schwind. After her sister, Edith, set up
a "blind date" with Joe, who was in the Navy stationed at the Naval Air Station in Traverse City, she decided that she was fortunate to meet this gentle man who also was a gentleman. She married the
love of her life, Joseph Lickteig, in Joe's home town of Louisville, Kentucky on June 29, 1946. They shared a lifetime of beautiful memories together as they raised their two children, Martin and Julie.
Her loss will be greatly felt by her family and many friends and relatives.
Lucile was a devout Roman Catholic her whole life. She honored her religious beliefs through daily rosary recital, prayers for friends and family, kindness in her actions, and attending Immaculate
Conception Church in Traverse City. She had a great sense of humor and always found something to be happy about. She was an excellent cook, brilliant crochet "queen," and daily New York Times crossword puzzle solver. However, her greatest joy was in traveling with Joe, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and sisters. She was especially fond of cruising and enjoyed both her Alaska and Canadian cruises at age 93! She also spent many weeks traveling through Europe and the Middle East. She would say: "pretty good for a farm girl!"
Lucile is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Julie (Jan) Dalton, her daughter-in-law, Nan Lickteig, her granddaughter, Michelle Lickteig, her grandsons, Joseph (Stacey) Dalton, Hans (Lauren Heath) Dalton, her two great-grandchildren, Raymond Staples and Renae Staples, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, her son Martin, her sisters and brothers-in-laws, Isabel (Stanley) Bristol, Leona (Frank) Kroupa, Edith (Joe) Hafer, Mildred (Wayne) Evans, and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Ferdinand (Betty) Schwind and John (Wilma) Schwind.
A celebration of Lucile's life will be planned at a future date, with burial at Joe's side at Memorial Gardens, Traverse City.
The family would like to thank the staff at Orchard Creek, NPalliative Care, and Hospice of Michigan,
especially Tonya, Shelly, Bree and Tara along with many friends and family who shared in the care of Lucile.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Cherryland Humane Society.
