Mary Elizabeth Kanka, 96, of Traverse City passed away October 19, 2015 at Munson Hospice House.

Elizabeth was born on November 23, 1918 in Darke County, Ohio to the late Ralph and Ruth (Hall) Merchant.

Elizabeth resided in the Traverse City area since 1929.

Elizabeth married Joseph T. Kanka on December 24, 1941.

Elizabeth enjoyed painting, cooking and travelling. She had a good sense of humor and liked a fresh cup of Folgers Coffee. Above all else, she loved spending time with her family.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband Joseph T. Kanka, son James "Jim" Kanka, grandson Jimmy Kanka, brother Jack Merchant and sisters Louise Rowe and Phyllis Stites.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughter Mary Jo Waldron and her friend Dennis Richards; grandchildren Joe, Jeff, Bethany, Brian, and Lisa, six great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren, brother Edwin (Beverly) Merchant, special friend and neighbor Marie Schaffer, and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 12 Noon at Acme Township Cemetery.
