Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Marjorie Jean Wilson, 88, of Traverse City, died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Tendercare Health Center of Leelanau in Suttons Bay. Jean was born on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 1922, to the late Birney and Hazel (Paine) Adams in Lansing. She married George E. Wilson Dec. 25, 1943, prior to his Army training at Fort Campbell, Ky. His unit was shipped to Europe for the last months of the war and then was shipped to California, where Jean joined him with an infant son. In 1951, after the war and a few years in Lansing, they moved to Traverse City with their two small sons, where George started the Traverse City Office of Capital Business Service. Her father was Assistant Secretary of Motor Wheel Corporation, her mother graduated from Oberlin College and was an art and music teacher. Her childhood was filled with music.She attended Michigan State University, majoring in music. She was an accomplished pianist and soprano vocalist. She was a member of the First Congregational Church choir as well as Musicale. She was an eager participant in the musical presentations at First Congregational Church each year. After her husband's death, she became an employee of Prange's department store. Later she volunteered at Munson Medical Center.Jean is survived by her sons, David (Kathy), of Indialantic, Fla., and their children, Eric (Krista), of Pittsburg, Pa., and Katherine Jean "Katie", of Jacksonville, Fla.; James (Char), of Traverse City, and their son, Adam, of Traverse City. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Carol Long. Jean was preceded in death by infant daughter, Andrea Jean; son, George E. Wilson Jr. "Bud Jr."; her husband, George "Bud"; as well as her two brothers and two sisters.Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at Oakwood Cemetery. Jean's family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to the Choral Program of First Congregational Church, 6105 Center Road, Traverse City 49686 or to Hospice of Michigan, 900 E.
