Obituary

Marek "Mark" Janusz Slupecki, age 65, of Traverse City and formerly of Gaylord, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024 surrounded by family and friends. He was born November 22, 1958 in Warsaw, Poland to Zofia Moczulski Slupecki and the late Janusz Slupecki.

Mark emigrated to the United States in 1965 and resided in the Dearborn Heights area of Michigan. He graduated from Crestwood High School in Dearborn Heights. Following his continued education at the National Institute of Technology, Mark was a Software Engineer and Programmer for IBM in both Saugerties, New York and Cleveland, Ohio. After moving back to Michigan, Mark returned to the hotel industry in which he grew up, managing the family businesses first in Gaylord and then in Traverse City. Mark married Lisa Schultz on October 14, 2000 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gaylord.

Mark loved to golf. As an adult he took numerous golf trips to California and Arizona with the friends from his youth. While living in Gaylord, he would golf multiple times a week with his new-found friends. He found great joy in introducing his children to the game. Mark was very social and found great enjoyment in hosting football weekends which included attending Friday night high school games, watching the University of Michigan on TV on Saturday and the Lions on Sunday. Card playing and golf were often involved, and all were welcomed, including his sons' many friends. He also spent several years curling and bowling. Upon moving to Traverse City, his focus changed more to boating and fishing, as well as shooting pool in his Mancave with family and friends, while trying to turn his daughter into a pool shark. He loved going to garage sales, thrift stores and auctions, always on the lookout for "a deal". He loved spending time with his family. He loved projects, whether it be gutting and remodeling his Traverse City home or designing and then redesigning his yard. At the time of his death, he had been on a quest for the dream car of his youth, a 1972 Gran Torino Sport Fastback.

Mark is survived by his wife, Lisa Slupecki, sons Robert Slupecki and Steven Slupecki and daughter Savanna Slupecki, mother Zofia Slupecki, sister Brigette (Kasia) Barbas and her husband Paul Barbas, as well as brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Robert (Irmagene) Schultz, Helmuth (Denyse) Schultz, Richard (Lucinda) Schultz, Dianne (Larry) Darga, Eileen Ries and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Janusz Slupecki.
