TRAVERSE CITY — Margaret "Diane" Brookshire, 70, of Traverse City, formerly of Dalton, Ga., died Sunday morning, Feb. 27, 2011, at Munson Medical Center. Born April 17, 1940, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Lee C. and Genevieve (Panek) Solem. Diane will be fondly remembered as a staunch animal advocate who was a longtime member of the ASPCA and the United States Humane Society.Following her son's death, Diane became very involved in Compassionate Friends, where she guided many through the grief cycle with her understanding, love and compassionate ways.She truly enjoyed her role as a homemaker, providing for her family and dear friends. It is said that she made the best apple pie east of the Mississippi River.She is survived by her children, Lee J. (Diane) Brookshire and Chrislynn K. (Mike) Carroll, all of Dalton, Ga.; grandchildren, Dianna Elam, Jonathon Brookshire, Noah Brookshire and Luke Brookshire; great-grandchild, Takaylah Elam; father, Lee C. (Genyth) Solem, of Northville; sisters, Donna (Ronald) Hollister, of Kingsley, and Marsha L. (Ray) Fortune, of Wyandotte; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.Diane was preceded in death by her mother, Genevieve Solem; son, John C. Brookshire; grandson, Donnie R. Elam Jr.; and a sister, Karen L. Solem.Memorial services have been held.
