The daughter of Margaret and George Deering, Margaret (Peggy) Hemming, died February 9, 2015, at home, surrounded by her family. Peggy was born February 28, 1924, and lived her entire life in Traverse City, marrying B.C. (Bill) Hemming, in July of 1948. Together they raised three children.
The hallmark of Peggy's life was her extensive number of friendships. School friends were the
foundation, to which she added the network of women from her child study club, bridge clubs, the
neighborhood, and, eventually, the dozens of her children's friends with whom she became close. All were welcomed to her home or cabin on the Boardman River, where her genuine interest and attention were assured. "Golden Hour" was a Hemming household tradition that she observed with dedication; a time that included everyone and anyone available for a snack, beverage, and lively conversation, presided over by the most gracious of hostesses.
An impeccable housekeeper, Peggy's leisure time was spent reading and avidly completing crossword puzzles. Her curiosity and lively mind led her to being a true lifelong learner.
The first three cornerstones of her life were family, friends, and home. The fourth was a faith in her
Catholic religion, that sustained her until the end.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Bill, and sister Ruth Dent. She is survived by her children, Ann, Jane (Karl), William (Elizabeth), granddaughters Annie, Jill (Ben) and Jessie, grandsons, Bart and Ross (Sarah), great grandson, Silas, and brothers, Pat (Marge), Don and Bob Deering.
