Obituary

Margaret Marie Jones of Acme passed away peacefully on May 26, 2023 at the age of 92 surrounded by her children. In her final years, love for her family and anticipation of their visits sustained her.

Margaret was born in Chicago, IL on October 7, 1930 to Orlo and Jennie (Bulmer) Crissey. Immediately following her college graduation, she married her high school sweetheart Clyde (Edward) Jones on June 13, 1952. They were happily married 64 years until his death in 2016. Ed and Margaret were blessed with four children, Richard (Linda) Jones of Rochester Hills, Marie (Joseph) Haezebrouck of Traverse City, Marilyn (Tracy) Bogle of Midland and Sharon (Kenneth) Foster of Suttons Bay, 11 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren, brother Forrest (Kathy) Crissey and sister Ruth Hinricks.

Margaret graduated as valedictorian from high school in Swartz Creek in 1948, and with Phi Beta Kappa honors from Albion College in 1952. At age 10 she taught her 5 year-old sister to read, inspiring her to pursue a degree in education. Margaret taught lower elementary and after her move to Traverse City in 1973 she volunteered for over 40 years at Bertha Vos Elementary, tutoring individual students in various subjects, often reading. Quoted from her high school valedictorian speech, "I am going to be a teacher, because to me teaching is one of the most important professions and by all means the most influential one. It is a teacher's responsibility not only to teach academic subjects but to help mold the characters and personalities of her students and to make them good citizens of their country and of the world." This responsibility is something she brought to every aspect of life, including her closest relationships. She never missed a teachable moment.

Margaret was a longtime member of American Association of University Women and served as their board president multiple times. She participated in many book groups due to her great love of reading, and especially enjoyed reading to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Ed were members of Friendship Force International which allowed them to travel the world, often with their best friends Bill and Sharon Kerkhof. In their later years, Ed and Margaret traveled the country in their fifth wheel and spent winters in Tucson, AZ.

Her family would like to thank Margaret's neighbors whose kindness lengthened the years she enjoyed in her home, the staff at the Boardman Lake Glens, and Hospice of Michigan for the loving care she received during her final year.
