Margaret Lasko

Margaret Lasko, 98, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Angela Hospice with her loving family by her side.

Margaret was born on July 6, 1928, in Portage, Pennsylvania, to the late Nicholas and Helen Hanak.

One of nine children, she was raised by parents who immigrated to the United States from Czechoslovakia. Her father was a coal miner, and Margaret learned early the importance of family, hard work, perseverance, and caring for others.

She lived through the challenges of World War II, including rationing, and left high school early to work in another state. These experiences helped shape the resilient woman she would become.

On August 13, 1949, Margaret married the love of her life, Walter Stanley Lasko, in Detroit, Michigan. She worked for Michigan Bell before devoting herself to raising their three children. Together, Margaret and Walter built a loving home centered on family. Margaret enjoyed cooking and hosting gatherings, always making others feel welcome.

Margaret was known for her exceptional kindness. She rarely had an unkind word to say and consistently put others before herself. Her gentle nature remained with her throughout her life.

She also faced significant health challenges, including an extended hospital stay while battling tuberculosis. Decades later, she endured the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through it all, Margaret showed remarkable strength, grace, and dignity.

Family was always most important to Margaret. She especially treasured being a grandmother and took great pride in her grandchildren. She and Walter also shared a love of travel, visiting destinations throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. In retirement, they lived for a time in Arizona and Florida before returning to Michigan.

For their 50th wedding anniversary, Margaret and Walter renewed their vows in Las Vegas and celebrated with a second honeymoon in Tahiti. They were true soulmates who cherished their life together.

Margaret enjoyed occasional trips to the casino, especially playing the slot machines, and appreciated life’s simple pleasures and time with family and friends.

Margaret lived a long and beautiful life defined by kindness, resilience, devotion to family, and love. She leaves behind a lasting example of quiet strength, compassion, and deep devotion to those she loved.

Margaret will be greatly missed by her children: Diane (Robbie) McCowan of Ann Arbor and Jeffrey (Mary) Lasko of Traverse City, 6 grandchildren: Justin and Collin, Nicole and Michelle, Andrew and Natalie and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Walter and son David.

Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church with a visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. A luncheon will follow and Burial will take place at Oakwood Catholic Cemetery next to Walter.
