Traverse City, Michigan - Margaret Ann Scannell, 91, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2023 at her home in Cordia surrounded by family.
Margaret was born on December 1, 1931 in West Branch, Michigan to the late Maurice Jeremiah and Alvena Louise (Brindley) O'Connor. The third of nine children, she was raised on a farm nestled on George Lake in Lupton, Michigan.
Margaret was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She gave her love unconditionally, and those that had the good fortune to have known her, loved her. She always had a smile to share and her optimism, positivity and laughter were contagious.
She lived her Catholic faith each day. She shared this gift by sponsoring and welcoming many into the Catholic church.
She was committed to health and fitness. She was an avid downhill skier and tennis player and enjoyed these activities into her 80's. She enjoyed traveling the world with her late husband, Bob.
Margaret became a widow with the untimely death of her first husband, John Phillip Ott, Sr. leaving her with three young boys. She then married Robert Joseph Scannell and had three more children. Margaret and Bob raised their family in Orchard Lake, Michigan and later moved to Newport Beach, California. For many years they had a summer home in Northport, Michigan where they hosted many happy gatherings with family and friends. After Bob's death in 2018, she settled in Traverse City, Michigan to be nearer to family.
She is survived by her children Daniel Ott, John (Mary) Ott Jr., Thomas (Patricia) Ott, Anne Marie Scannell, Peter (Laurie) Scannell, Lisa Scannell; grandchildren Morgan (Ott) Foley, Ellen (Ott) Filippi, and Conor Ott, Melissa, Sophia and Paul Ott, Christoper and Jake DeKoker, Ryan and Elizabeth Scannell, Alec, Joseph, Alaina, and Keelie Scholhamer; great grandchildren, Rory and Ben Foley, Charlotte Filippi; siblings Theresa Clark, Frances O'Connor, Ann (Fred) Gulick, Phyllis (Tim Crowner) O'Connor, and Kathleen (Robert) DeGange; She is preceded in death by her other siblings, Maurice O'Connor, Mary Dikos and Thomas O'Connor.
The memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at St. Francis Catholic Church with a visitation prior at 3:00pm . There will be a Celebration of Life from 12:00pm - 3:00pm on Friday, September 22, 2023 at the Artisan in the Delamar Hotel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Autism Research Institute (autism.org) and Muscular Dystrophy Association (mda.org).
