TRAVERSE CITY — Margaret A. "Peg" Smith, 94, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2010, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City. Peg was born on Thursday, June 8, 1916, to the late Edward and Ruth (Hicks) Montgomery in Chicago.Growing up in Vesta, Minn., she continued her education following high school at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. After earning her degree there in 1939, she attended and graduated from National College of Education in Evanston, Ill. Peg then lived and taught school in Onaway. On Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1943, she married Clyde Smith, who preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 1967. Peg and Clyde moved to Traverse City in 1952 from Detroit. She taught at Traverse Heights Elementary School for many years prior to her retirement.An active member of Central United Methodist Church; Peg thoroughly enjoyed her Yokefellow group and her years singing with the Central Choir. She also enjoyed her membership in Delta Kappa Gama and the Michigan Retired Teachers organization.Peg is survived by her son, James and his wife, Terry Smith of Traverse City; and her beloved grandsons, Corey and Keaton. Visitation for Peg will take place on Monday, June 14, from 4 until 7 p.m., at The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Services celebrating Peg's 94 years of life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, at Central United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dale Ostema officiating.
