Maria Asuncion Hummel (nee Roca), 93, passed away March 29, 2023 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions, Traverse City, MI.
Maria was born on October 11, 1929, to the late Armengol and Josefa (Prats) in San Salvador, El Salvador. She was one of 4 children, one older brother and 2 younger sisters.
On April 21, 1963 she married Max Hummel in San Salvador. Together they raised two daughters, Maria and Rosa.
Maria was fortunate to live in many places around the world. At the age of 92, she was able to travel back to El Salvador with her family for a very special family reunion.
Maria often befriended other Latinos in the US and joined Latino groups so that she could share her heritage with others. In August of 1982, she became a US citizen of which she was very honored and proud.
Maria loved entertaining family and friends, cooking, crafting, crocheting, playing Bingo, going to the movies, traveling and volunteering. Above all else, she loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Maria lived life to the fullest and she made each moment count. She was so full of joy and zest and selflessly shared that with all.
She is survived by daughters, Maria (Rod) Taplin, & Rosa (Brian) Breneman, and her grandchildren, Mitchel (Shelby) Taplin, Ellie Taplin, Maya and Sander Breneman, her sister, Josefina Roca de Bazan from Brazil, loving nephews and nieces from El Salvador, Brazil and Switzerland.
She is preceded in death by her parents, a younger sister, Victoria "Toya" Roca de Cabrera, her brother, Luis Roca and her husband Max Hummel.
A family memorial service will take place this spring and a celebration of her life will take place this summer.
