TRAVERSE CITY - Marian Elizabeth Mingus, 83, of Empire, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Marian was born on December 10, 1932, to Byron and Eva (Jackson) Myers in Mesick. She attended Mesick schools and graduated in 1951.
After high school graduation Marian worked as a bookkeeper. Marian met her future husband in 1954 when he was dating her roommate. He declared it was love at first sight, and on June 25, 1955, she married Richard G. Mingus in Traverse City. Richard was a tech sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and stationed in Empire. After they married they raised their family in Empire with brief assignments in Minnesota. Marian was elected the township clerk for the village of Empire and worked many years before eventually retiring. Richard retired from the Air Force after 20 years. After retirement they travelled extensively in their RV across the U.S. to visit family and friends. They were deeply devoted to each other until Richard died on June 15, 2000.
Marian enjoyed a quiet life in Empire, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved to bake, grow beautiful flowers, read, and sew..
She is survived by her children Steven (Pamela) Mingus of Traverse City, Linda (Wayne) Taghon of Empire, and Gayle (Chuck) Reynolds of Oak Park; 7 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
Marian was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; and her brothers, Lawrence and Harvey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 6, 2016 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire, with visitation held one hour prior at the church. A luncheon will follow the service at the church.
