Marilyn Ruth Dumond

Marilyn Ruth DuMond, 84, of Traverse City, passed away on March 26, 2025, at Munson Medical Center.

Marilyn was born on September 1st, 1940, in Newberry, Michigan, to the late Ellis and Ruby (Lawson) Movalson. After graduating from high school, she attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette to pursue a degree in education. During this period she had the opportunity to be an extra in Anatomy of a Murder, where she met Jimmy Stewart. In 1961, she was named Miss Mackinac County, and participated in the National Cherry Festival serving on the Queen's court.

She met and fell in love with Leroy Frank DuMond, and they were united in marriage on June 23, 1962, in Brevort, Michigan. As a Michigan State Police officer, Leroy's career took them across the state multiple times, creating a life full of adventure and new experiences. Together they raised one loving and devoted daughter Deborah DuMond Berry.

Marilyn had a passion for art, painting, music, and fashion. She would often sketch people, nature scenes or other images without templates and could also play music by ear. She had a gifted eye for fashion which she utilized at many stores across the state.

She loved children and volunteered or worked as an aid at several schools as they moved for the State Police. She was enthusiastic about her faith and shared it through teaching Sunday School throughout Michigan. In 1970, she started a Girl Scout Troop at her Daughter's elementary school in Coldwater and served on the counsel. She also contributed significantly to the American Cancer Society of Lower Michigan through her volunteer work. Her kindness and service touched many in every town she lived, but it was her faith and witnessing that made her special among God's children.

Marilyn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Leroy; her daughter, Deborah (Joe) Berry; her grandson, Joseph; her granddaughter, Marilyn (Carter) Johns; great granddaughters Kiersten and Madeleine and her brother, Charles (Elaine) Movalson, along with many other loving family members and friends.

Visitation will be held at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home from 3:00 to 6:00 PM Friday April 25th. Funeral services will take place at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort Michigan on July 3rd, 2025, where Marilyn attended as a child. Burial will follow at Western Cemetery in Brevort.
