Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Marjorie A. Ferguson Burtraw, 96, of Traverse City, passed away Monday, April 18, 2011, at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.Marjorie was born April 21, 1914, to the late Jesse and Retta (Hamilton) Hair in Ionia. She entered into marriage with C.B. Ferguson on Oct. 30, 1933; many years after his passing, Marjorie was married to Merritt Burtraw, on Nov. 27, 1981.Marjorie moved to the area in 1989, and was able to enjoy many wonderful years with her daughter, Mary, and family.Marjorie enjoyed traveling, especially out west. She would often be found keeping in touch by writing letters to family and friends. One of Marjorie's favorite pastimes was watching and listening to the Detroit Tigers baseball games — she was a very devoted fan.Marjorie was talented in the kitchen and liked to cook and bake for many, including her church. Even in later years, she continued to pass time while crocheting afghans, as well as doing some knitting. Marjorie also was a very loving, caring person, who was often found caring for the sick and needy in her community, helping in any way she could.Marjorie was an active and instrumental part of the United Brethren Church of Harrison for many years, as well as the Leota Community Church and The Fife Lake Baptist Church. She was strong in her faith and made many lasting friendships over the years. Marjorie played the organ for the churches in which she was active, as well as performing at many weddings and funerals.Marjorie also loved animals, and had a special fondness for Boston Terriers. She always had one as a pet and companion, until her later years.She very much loved, and had a very special place in her heart for "Heidi Sue" who will deeply miss her Grandma.Marjorie is survived by her loving daughter and best friend, Mary Jane (Patrick) Collins, of Traverse City; her granddaughters, Patricia (Randy) Hendges, of Traverse City, and Shelley (David) Glady, of Suttons Bay; and six great-grandchildren; her recent addition, her great-great-grandson, Leo Patrick Hendges; her stepdaughter, Phyllis Plunge; as well as many other loving family members and friends.Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, C.B.; her second husband, Merritt; her parents; her step-son, Norman Burtraw; and a half-brother.Private family services have taken place and graveside committal services were held at Acme Township Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.Please share thoughts with the family at Marjorie's online guest book at www.reynolds-jonkhoff.comThe family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
