Obituary

Mark Ellery Martin, 62, of Glen Arbor, left his house to go home to the Lord on December 14, 2015, ending his fourteen month battle with cancer. Mark was preceded in death by his parents John and Rebecca (Harger) Martin.

Mark was born in Pontiac on September 27, 1953 and graduated from Pontiac Central High School in 1971. He and classmate Catherine (Stuckman) Martin married in November of 1973. In 1978, they moved to Empire, MI, where they started and raised their family. Mark is survived by wife, Cathy, son Clint (Ashley) Martin and grandchildren Porter and Rowan, daughter Mary (Brian) Westbrook and grandchildren Mason and Harlow, and son Marchsll Martin. Mark is also survived by his brothers Mike and John (Terri) Martin, and sister, Janene (Al) Walker, along with numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Mark's passion for woodworking enabled him to have a successful career. Gifted in every phase of carpentry, Mark was very accomplished in the fine finishing aspect; leaving behind numerous staircases, fireplace surrounds, cabinetry, kitchens, paneled rooms, furniture, etc. throughout Grand Traverse and Leelanau County homes. Highly respected in the construction industry, Mark also was known for his sense of humor. Believing in giving back to the community, among other community commitments, Mark served as coach to several Glen Lake Community Schools teams, Kasson Township Planning Commissioner, Glen Lake Community Reformed Church Praise Band member and former deacon, and after-school youth group volunteer. Mark was proudly a member of the Empire Masonic Lodge #597 and a Knights Templar, a licensed builder, and fishing charter captain. And a friend of many.

Anyone who knew Mark realized how important all aspects of fishing were to him, from designing and building multiple boats to collecting lures, and smoking and grilling salmon. Mark spent much of his free time with family and friends out on the lakes. Playing the guitar and singing at many performances at local events and weddings were also a highlight of Mark's. Mark lived a very full life and accomplished most of his professional and personal goals. His wish is that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Empire Masonic Lodge at P.O. Box 209, Empire, MI 49630.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 19 at 4:00 p.m. at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church with visitation beginning at 2:00. Pastor Jan Price will officiate, followed by a meal in the fellowship hall.
