Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Martha Anna Raney, 94, a longtime resident of Traverse City, died early Monday morning, March 5, 2012, at Munson Medical Center, following a brief illness.Born Sept. 12, 1917, in Westfield, Ind., she was the daughter of the late William and Gladys (Jessup) Stephenson. On Sept. 24, 1937, in Traverse City, she married Kenneth Raney, who preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 1985.She attended Lewis Chapin Business School. For over 25 years she served as a bookkeeper for Production Credit Association and earlier she served as an office clerk for Montgomery Wards.Martha enjoyed watching TV and old movies, flower gardening, yard work, picking wild blueberries, canning, making jelly, traveling, camping, listening to country music with a steel guitar and her memorable Jeep rides. Despite her vast and varied hobbies, her core interest always remained with her family.Martha was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and served as their financial secretary for a number of years. She also liked volunteering at Munson Medical Center.She is survived by her children, Kenneth Lee (Penny) Raney, of Traverse City, Kenna Jean (Robert) Howard, of Kalamazoo, and Helen Irene (Gary) Cummings, of Bay City; sister-in-law, Bonnie Raney; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Irene Endres; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Neil "Bud" Brondyke; along with a great-grandson, Brandon Roush.Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Saturday, March 10, 2012, from 3 to 4 p.m., with the service beginning at 4 p.m. Mr. Tim Moeggenberg with officiate. Graveside services with burial will take place this spring at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, with service information to be announced.In remembrance of Martha, memorials may be directed to the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging.
