Obituary

Martin "Marty" Mann May, 55 of Traverse City died unexpectedly after a short serious illness on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

Marty was born on September 7, 1968 in Traverse City to Kenneth and Cynthia (Perrett) May.

Marty graduated from Traverse City Senior High, class of 1988. After graduation he joined the Army serving in the 10th Mountain Division. He served with distinction until he was honorably discharged in 1993.

Marty was a true outdoor enthusiast, finding joy in nature and the outdoors. He loved camping, sailing, and anything to do with water. In his younger years, he was known for exploring the hills with his buddies behind the State Hospital, likely one of the first to venture into the fields, hills, and trails on a mountain bike. His adventurous spirit also led him to enjoy rappelling off hillsides, always seeking the thrill of the outdoors. Marty's passion for nature extended to camping, particularly relishing the challenge of doing so in adverse weather conditions. His connection to the natural world and his love for adventure were defining aspects of his life.

Marty will be most remembered for his kind heart, sensitive soul, and love for the great outdoors. He was a loving father, stepfather, partner, brother, and son. Rest in peace, Marty.

Marty is survived by his child Mylo (Maisey) May, his parents Ken and Cindy, his siblings, Kimberly (Patrick Blashill) May and Drew (Carrie) May, his former wife Rosie May, his stepson Donovan Flickinger, his beloved dog Sparky, and his cat Duchess, along with many other loving family members and friends.

He is preceded in death by his former wife Katrina Shelly.

A memorial service will be held later in the year. Memorial contributions in his honor may be directed to American Cancer Society or Munson Hospice House. Kindly share thoughts and memories with his family at www.reynolds-jonkhoff.com .
