Marvin Gordon Grant, 93, of Traverse City, passed away Sunday, October 28th, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Marvin was born March 7, 1925 in Lake Leelanau, the son of Arthur and Clara (Sylt) Grant. On September 10, 1946 he married Hazel Whitney, of Flint, MI, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay.
As a young man Marvin served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII as a waist gunner on the B24 Liberator heavy bomber reaching the rank of Sergeant.
After serving in WWII he worked as a house painter, then worked at Parson's Manufacturing and then moved on to a long career with VanBrocklin Service working 32 years as a certified automatic transmission expert.
After retiring Marvin spent his time enjoying many hobbies including nurturing his large garden, fishing, hunting, with many family members and friends, and working on numerous projects with his brother in-law Wally Schaub.
Marvin is survived by his wife Hazel of 72 years; his children, Linda Rathbun and David (Sherry) Grant; he was the oldest of 10 siblings, Doris Skipski, Julia Johnson, Louise Schaub, Betty (Cal) Cole, Bernice Conrad and Jackie Harrington; 5 grandchildren, Kip (Shannon) Rathbun, Kimberli (Frisco) Borrero, Nikki (Jason) Katz, Kenny Grant Jr., Wendy Grant; and 9 amazing great grandchildren Logan, Katelyn, Kendall, Austin, Ryan, Alyssa, Jayden, Aiden, and Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Ken Grant Sr., and his siblings Elmer, Eldon and James Grant.
A visitation for Marvin will take place from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A funeral service for Marvin will take place at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 11:00 am with a visitation one hour prior. Pastor Paul Busekist will officiate. A luncheon will take place immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. A graveside service for Marvin will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, November 9, 2018 at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
