TRAVERSE CITY — Mary Louise Bain, 82, of Traverse City, formerly of Camarillo, Calif., passed away June 29, 2010, at Munson Hospice House. Mary was a registered nurse in Camarillo and returned to Traverse City after her retirement.Mary was born Nov. 22, 1927, in Traverse City, to the late William Nettleton Bain and Marie Louise Harrand Bain.Mary had a variety of interests she lovingly cultivated throughout her life. Perhaps most pre-eminent in Mary's life was her love of music. She was a professional flutist and music instructor in California. After her fingers no longer allowed her to play her beloved golden flute, she gave the instrument to a former student. When she returned to Traverse City, Interlochen Public Radio became her daily companion and she often attended music events at Interlochen Center for the Arts.Additionally, Mary was a life-long animal lover, having owned and cared for many dogs and horses in California. Once she returned to northern Michigan, her friends could always count on her to be a magnificent dog-sitter.Mary was also a skilled knitter and donated sweaters to children in need up until the time of her illness. One of Mary's great loves was the beautiful lakes that surround the Grand Traverse area. As a child, Mary loved spending summers at her parents' Spider Lake cabin. After moving back into the area in 2002, Mary enjoyed both the views of Boardman Lake from her home and regular visits with friends on Spider Lake. She is survived by a brother, Robert William Bain; special cousins, Marcia Lynch and Bill (Mary) Bain; aunts, Catherine Lueck and Pauline LaBonte; and many dear friends.A celebration of Mary's life will take place at the site of her childhood cabin at the home of Ann and Tom Post on Friday, July 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pastor Chris Lane from Central United Methodist Church will officiate and luncheon will be served.
