Our mother Kathy Cook, 84, of Traverse City, formerly of Detroit, was called home by our Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, June 7, 2013, at Munson Hospice House.
Born September 28, 1928 in Detroit, the daughter of the late Herman and Ora (Snively) Burkhart. She graduated from Redford High School, class of '47. Attended the University of Guelph in Canada completing the Women's Home Economics Program. She married the late William Cook on March 28, 1952 at Redford Presbyterian Church in the Detroit area.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, raising three daughters in Detroit before moving to Lima, Ohio for Will's work. While in Ohio Kathy was involved in Women's Aglow serving as a Board Member. She also served as President on the Traverse City Aglow Board. Kathy and Will moved to Traverse City in 1988 to be closer to two of their children and grandchildren. Always involved with her church she volunteered her time and talents at Christ United Methodist of Traverse City Most important throughout her life were faith in God, family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Ora Burkhart, stepmother Jessie (Campbell) Burkhart, and husband of 58 years, William Cook.
Kathy is survived by her daughters, Karen (John) VanDusen of Williamsburg, Laurie (Michael) Shakarian of Livonia and Julie (Robert) Opsasnick of Traverse City; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A Memorial service will be held at Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Thursday, June 27, 2013, at 1:00 pm. There will be a luncheon at Schelde's Restaurant following the service.
In remembrance of Kathy, memorials may be directed to Samaritan's Purse or Munson Hospice House.
