Obituary

Mary Kathleen Dietrich, age 83, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, in Michigan, supported by her family and lovingly anointed by her brother, Fr. Bernard Owens.
Mary lived a joyful and generous life, rooted in faith, family, and friendship. Born in Flint, Michigan, she was the third of five children, and the only daughter, of John Christopher and Bernice Owens. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Charles H. Dietrich, her infant brother John Christopher II, mother-in-law Mary Iolene Giffin (Charles), and sisters-in-law Marlene (Jerry) Freed, Lottie Elaine (Fred) Stacy.
Mary is survived by her four children: Charles (Jacque), Kristine, Karyn, and Christian (Lorna); her grandchildren Arielle, Taylor, Owen, Finn, and Angus; her brothers Bernard, Pat, and John; and her Uncle Mike Coggins.
Mary spent her high school years in Wisconsin, where the family moved due to her father's work with General Motors. She later returned to Michigan, graduating from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Flint in 1963. It was there that she formed lifelong friendships with Judy Rice and Pauline Miller. Together, with their husbands, they shared decades of laughter and adventure while camping, snowmobiling, Corvette cruising, scrapbooking, and even sailing the Caribbean.
Mary met Charlie in Ann Arbor, and they were married in June 1964 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Troy, Michigan. Their marriage was enriched by their involvement in Marriage Encounter during the 1970s, which fostered enduring friendships, especially with Joanie and Tony Sincic and their family.
A passionate hobbyist behind the camera, Mary was rarely without her lens. What began as a pastime became a treasured talent, as she captured life's beauty in the everyday moments of her growing family.
In the mid-1980s, Mary and Charlie surprised many by purchasing a gentlemen's farm in Northport, Michigan. Mary moved first, raising hens and selling eggs while continuing her nursing career at Leelanau Memorial and Munson Medical Center. The farm blossomed into a haven where family and friends were warmly welcomed to enjoy cherry picking, pig roasts, wagon rides, and her award-winning pies and homemade jams.
In the 1990s, Mary became a Master Gardener through Michigan State University and earned the affectionate title of "The Flower Lady." Her artistry and dedication brought beauty to the village of Northport, where she landscaped public spaces including the library, marina, and downtown gardens.
Later, inspired by a trip Mary took to Mexico, Mary and Charlie sold the farm, bought a storage business to "keep Charlie busy," set off on new adventures, most memorably boating excursions with friends from the Traverse City Power Squadron and Ahgosatown Landing Marina. Mary continued traveling to Mexico with Joanie in the winters but eventually decided to make a second home in Boynton Beach, Florida, where she could garden year-round under the sun and knit handmade garments for all.
A few years after Charlie's passing in 2020, Mary returned to Michigan, where she was lovingly cared for by her family. Her legacy of warmth, resilience, and joy will live on in all who knew her.
