Mary Ann Dunbar passed from this life to the other side suddenly this past January while at home.
Mary Ann was raised in Dearborn Heights and moved to Traverse City with the family in 1978. She graduated from St. Francis High School. She worked at Skate World and Nish-Nah-Bee Industries before returning to school to study cosmetology. Her long career as a stylist began in the salon at Milliken's Department Store. She worked at the Logan's Landing Hair Port, C. Quinn's Hair Design and Christopher Jon. Eventually she opened her own salon, Studio II Hair Design, on Eighth Street. She loved doing hair but more than that, she treasured her clients, so many of whom she considered friends.
Mary Ann loved getting together with family and friends here in Traverse City, 'up north' and downstate near the old neighborhood. Among her many other interests, she loved music, had very fond memories of attending performances at the Fox Theater in years past, and was quite the audiophile. She had a lot of fun volunteering as an usher at the Cherry County Playhouse with her mother and sister. Since the pandemic she enjoyed keeping in touch with everyone through Facebook.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her father Richard J. Dunbar in 1982, her brother Richard J. Dunbar, Jr. and her mother Rosemary in 2021. She was very strong in her faith and is no doubt very busy reconnecting with her family along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She is survived by her sister Patty.
A memorial Mass is scheduled for 11:00 am, Thursday February 16, visitation one hour prior, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Traverse City. For those unable to attend Mass in person, visit
