TRAVERSE CITY — Mary Jane Garey, 90, of Traverse City, passed away with her family by her side, at Bortz Health Care on Feb. 10, 2011. Mary Jane was born on April 10, 1920, in Northport to the late John and Myrtle (Calhoun) Leabo. On Oct. 30, 1948, Mary Jane married the love of her life, Lewis R. Garey, whom she joins in heaven. Prior to his death on Feb. 8, 1999, they shared 50 wonderful years together. In her spare time Mary Jane enjoyed bowling, crafts and sewing. She was a wonderful baker and loved canning. In her younger years she worked tirelessly alongside her husband on their fruit farm. Mary Jane also worked at Fisher's grocery store on Eighth Street and in the cafeteria for the Traverse City Public Schools. Mary Jane was a devout member of St. Francis Catholic Church. She was also a former member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Mary Jane is survived by her daughters, Marie (Jim) Schueller, of Traverse City, and Jeane Blood, of Traverse City; sons, Bill (Noralee) Garey, of Beulah, and Jack (Vicki) Garey, of Kingsley; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis; parents; sisters, Cleo Boonstra, Ruth Flees, Kathleen VanHoven and Joy Gohn; and brother, Mark Blaine Leabo. Visitation for Mary Jane will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m. A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at St. Francis Catholic Church, at 11 a.m. Graveside committal services will take place at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Michigan or to St. Francis Catholic Church.
