Mary Ann Hoogerhyde, age 86, died peacefully in Traverse City on October 19, 2026, surrounded by her beloved family.
Mary was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on October 5, 1940, the daughter of Douglas C. Fox and Rosalie Quillan Fox, and sister to Janet and Robert. She attended Grand Rapids Catholic Central, graduating with the Class of 1958. It was there that she met and fell in love with her husband of 63 years, Thomas C. Hoogerhyde.
Mary earned her LPN in Grand Rapids. Her sweet and gentle soul endeared her to everyone who crossed her path. Tom and Mary were married on August 31, 1963, and made their home in Lansing. Mary was employed by Sparrow Hospital, where her tender care, strong work ethic, and competence set an example for all who knew her.
Mary’s true calling was motherhood, and she was an exceptional mother. It was her greatest gift, and she loved every minute spent with her children.
Mary dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and baker. In her generous and loving way, Mary would bake each grandchild a frosted banana cake to take home after a fun-filled visit to Mimi and Papa’s home in Traverse City.
Mary was also gifted with a keen eye for home décor, balance, and style. Her home was always immaculate and beautifully decorated.
Mary Ann will always be remembered as an example of love, generosity, tenderness, kindness, and goodness. She was beautiful and gracious, quietly attentive, and steadfast in her faith and commitment to family and friends.
Mary is survived by her beloved husband, Thomas Hoogerhyde of Traverse City, Michigan; her children, Julie (Michael) Smith of Lansing, Michigan, Michael (Denise) Hoogerhyde of Pinckney, Michigan, and Kris Hoogerhyde (Nate Matthisen) of San Francisco, California; her grandchildren, Tabatha (Kip) Krumlauf, Tim (Becky) Hoogerhyde, Emma (Dylon) McMann, Eric (Brandi) Smith, and Dashiell Hoogerhyde; her great-grandchildren, Corinne, Connor, and Lleyton Krumlauf, and Willow and Evelyn Hoogerhyde; and her sister, Janet Fox (Myers).
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Douglas C. Fox, who died in 1993, and Rosalie Quillan Fox, who died in 1973, and her brother, Robert Fox, who died in 2015.
