Mary Elizabeth Kausler Ravary passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024, in Traverse City, Michigan. Born on November 28, 1948, in Monroe, Michigan, Mary lived a life full of purpose, laughter, and boundless compassion.
Mary's early years were spent at Trinity Lutheran School in Monroe, where she forged lifelong friendships that endured through every stage of her life. Her childhood antics, often retold with growing hilarity, became the stuff of legend and a source of joy to all who knew her.
Mary attended Monroe High School, where she shone both academically and socially. She was an active member of the Flamingos synchronized swimming group, serving as vice president, and held leadership roles in the Ushers Club and the Girls Athletic Association. Mary graduated in 1966 and went on to pursue her degree at Michigan State University, graduating in 1970.
Shortly after, Mary married Pete Carlton at Trinity Lutheran Church in Monroe, and the couple moved to Hawaii. There, Mary worked for the State of Hawaii public school system, offering guidance and education at a school for pregnant girls. While Hawaii offered adventure and new experiences, Mary returned to Michigan in 1974 to pursue her Master's degree in social work at Michigan State University, which she completed in 1976.
In 1976, Mary relocated to Traverse City, where she began her professional career at the Murchie House, then the Traverse City State Hospital working with troubled youth for 10 years and finally she brought her expertise and warmth to the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District where she served as a counselor and advocate for at-risk students, making a profound difference in the lives of countless young people.
Mary married Ray Ravary in 1999, and she found great joy as she embraced the role of stepmother and cherished traveling with the extended Ravary family.
In retirement, Mary's days were filled with passion and purpose. She devoted herself to volunteering within Alcoholics Anonymous, leading meetings in various venues, including the women's prison. She headed the local AA Activities Committee and put together the annual weekend long camp out and river float for 13 years. Her deep commitment to helping others in their journeys of recovery became the cornerstone of her life's mission. Mary's natural ability to mentor, inspire, and uplift others left a legacy of compassion and resilience that will never be forgotten.
Mary also found immense joy in her personal pursuits, from solo camping trips under the stars to fly fishing, and she delighted in traveling and cruising with a variety of friends to explore all corners of the globe.
Mary spent her final years in the company of her delightful companion, Billy Hogan. The two met serendipitously in Florida during a visit to an elephant habitat. A simple conversation revealed how much they had in common, sparking a connection that soon blossomed into a relationship. Together, they embarked on years of adventures, traveling, camping, and sharing the companionship of their beloved dog. Florida became their winter home, a place where they created countless memories and shared their happiness.
Mary had a rich and full life though not without challenges, but challenges that she was able to overcome with her sense of humor and ability to see the bright side of life.
