Obituary

Mary Lynn "Lynn" (Angove) Swanson, 70, bid her family and friends a final farewell on January 6, 2023, at the French Manor South in Traverse City. Lynn had resided there for 20 months following her cancer diagnosis.

Lynn was the only daughter—with two brothers—of Ed and Louise Angove of Northville, MI. She had an idyllic childhood with her family and grandparents in Northville and summers spent on Glen Lake, near Glen Arbor, MI. Her father died suddenly when Lynn was 13, a turning point for her whole family. Ed's "Little Princess" felt this loss throughout her life.

Graduating from Northville High School in 1970, Lynn attended Alma College, Alma, MI, during which time she spent a semester in Paris. While at Alma, she met the love of her life, Bob Swanson, of Manistee, MI. Bob and Lynn were married almost 25 years, and made Traverse City their home for most of those years. Bob was an outstanding tennis player, and Lynn could be seen on the sidelines of his tennis matches, ever the cheer leader. Bob passed away, yet another cancer victim in 1999, leaving Lynn with a second life-long void.

After Bob's death, Lynn relocated to Big Bay, MI, in the Upper Peninsula. Lynn's friends expanded beyond the core group of tennis players to a wide variety of north woods folks. She returned to Traverse City in 2015.

In recent years, Lynn's interests have been consistent: she was a devoted friend to many, she adored her three nephews and three nieces, and her love of black labs was unparalleled. Zeke! Mo! Luke! An ongoing focus was the support of the Bob Swanson Memorial Tennis Tournament and Scholarship Event. Since his death, Bob's tennis buddies have raised through this tournament $133,000, granting 109 college scholarships to high school seniors in the region. Lynn was very proud of this.

Lynn is preceded in death by her beloved husband Bob, her parents Edward and Louise Angove, maternal grandparents Paul and Mary Alexander, and paternal grandparents Percy and Eloise Angove, she was also very fond of Bob's late parents, Howard and Lorraine Swanson.

Mourning her death are her brothers Larry (Kathy) Angove of Traverse City, MI, and Ron (Melissa) Angove of Atlanta, MI, and her nephews Scott (Susie) Angove of Minneapolis, MN, and Blake (Kate) Angove of Traverse City, MI. Bob's sister Jane (Doug) Smith of Holland, MI and their children were special to Lynn as well: Allison Kornoelje (Craig) Zeeland, MI, Martha Lavin (Charlie) of Whitefish Bay, WI, Emily Smith of Phoenix, AZ, and Spencer (Kevin Carney) Smith of Washington, DC.

Lynn's family is grateful for the stellar work of the doctors and staff of the Cowell Cancer Center. The French Manor South provided a loving, warm home for Lynn, and their contributions to her well-being were valiant. Hospice of Michigan offered help to Lynn and guidance to her family in this troubling time.

Visitation will be held for Lynn at 2:00 on Thursday, January 12, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with a memorial service to follow at 3:00. An open house to celebrate Lynn's life will be held at The Elks Lodge from 4-6. Memorial donations may be made to the Bob Swanson Memorial Tennis Tournament and Scholarship Event, addressed to Blake Angove, 4356 Foxfire, Traverse City, MI. 49684.
