Mary Lee Penny

Mary Lee Penny, age 84, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026. She was born on January 24, 1942, in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, to her loving parents, Leland and Marie (VanAken) Doxtader.

Mary's greatest blessing in life was the love she shared with her husband, William "John" Penny. The two were united in marriage on December 1, 1961, beginning a beautiful journey together that was filled with faith, love, and unwavering devotion. Their marriage remained a shining example of commitment until John's passing earlier in 2026.

In 1962, not long after they were married, Mary made the journey across the country to be with John while he was serving in the military—a testament to her steadfast love and dedication. Throughout her life, she remained a faithful and caring woman whose greatest joy was serving both her family and her Lord.

Mary was a devoted member of East Bay Calvary Church, where she found great fulfillment singing in the church choir, attending the ladies' Bible study group, and growing in her faith. She loved the Lord Jesus and lived her life as a quiet reflection of His love through acts of kindness and compassion.

She found happiness in the simple blessings of life. Mary enjoyed spending time in nature, taking scenic drives and sightseeing, sharing meals out with family and friends, baking homemade cookies, and sending thoughtful cards and handwritten notes that brightened the days of those fortunate enough to receive them.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William "John" Penny; her parents, Leland and Marie Doxtader; her brothers Richard, Charles, William and Harold and sister, Marjorie Sexton.

She is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews along with several extended family members, dear friends, and her church family, all of whom were blessed by her kindness, faith and enduring love.

A service for Mary will take place on Monday, August 3rd at East Bay Calvary Church with a reception hour starting at 1:00pm, and the funeral at 2:00pm.
