Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — Mary E. Rader, 86, a retired Registered Nurse of Glen Arbor, died Sunday evening, Feb. 26, 2012, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.Born June 12, 1925, in Leelanau County, she was the daughter of the late H. Clifford and Ruth (Groesser) Foster. On May 17, 1947, also in Leelanau County, she married Jack D. Rader who died in March of 1988.Mary attended and graduated from Suttons Bay schools and furthered her education by attending Butterworth School of Nursing.Mary, along with her husband, owned and operated Rader's Gift Shop in Glen Arbor and numerous other small businesses.As a life-long resident of Leelanau County, she believed strongly in giving back to her community through her memberships with the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church, Glen Arbor Jr. Women's Club, Zonta of Traverse City, Glen Arbor Fire Department and Glen Arbor Ambulance Rescue, which she helped establish. She was also a member of the Retired School Personnel, R.S.V.P., American Red Cross, and volunteered for the American Cancer Society for over 48 years.Mary was one of the first Lady Firefighters in the State of Michigan.Mary is survived by her loving children, Jack D (Christine) Rader II of Cedar, Robert D. (Mary C. Welter) Rader of West Dundee, Ill., and Heidi R. Rader of Empire; siblings, Mildred A. Chervenka of Suttons Bay, Robert C. (Dorothy) Foster of Orville, Calif. and Edna J. (Bill) Wright of Borrego Springs, Calif.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Annette.Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home today, Feb. 29, 2012, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., where the Rader Family will receive friends.Memorial Services will be held at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church 4902 W. MacFarland Road, Glen Arbor, Mich. 49636, on Thursday, March 1, at 10 a.m. Rev. Andrew Bossardet will officiate. Cremation has taken place.In remembrance of Mary, memorial contributions may be directed to the H. Clifford Foster Scholarship Fund, C/O Northwestern Michigan College.
