Mary Ann Shultz

Mary Ann Elizabeth Shultz, 94, of Old Mission Peninsula passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2016. She was born in Nashville, Michigan on February 16, 1922 to Ida May and Herbert Wright. She graduated from Nashville High School . On February 28, 1940, she married Gerald C. Shultz in Ionia, Michigan. They moved to Lansing, Michigan, where Mary worked at the State Capitol Building for the Secretary of State’s office. During World War II, Mary returned to live in Nashville with her mother and young son while Gerald served in the Merchant Marine. After the war, Mary and Gerald became merchants; they owned and operated small grocery stores in Lake Odessa and Belding, Michigan. These businesses were a partnership with Mary taking on a daily role in the operation of their stores. They went on to purchase their first cherry farm on the Old Mission Peninsula and become cherry farmers. Mary continued her active role in this endeavor as well. She was a member of several local Farm Bureau groups throughout the years. She was also a long time member of the Mapleton Ladies Friendship Club. She spent many winters in Florida, where she enjoyed the sun and Gerald enjoyed fishing. While living in Florida, she was active in many community groups, including the St. James City Civic Association where she held many offices. Mary enjoyed her gardens over the years and was a wonderful cook with all her fresh produce. She also loved to read, especially Harlequin Romances. In recent years she became an avid Tigers baseball fan, watching all the televised games. She is survived by her children: Gary, David (Mary Lois ), and Sandy(Gordon), her five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald of 57 years, her parents, and her siblings: Harold, Gordon, and Dorothy. The family would like to thank the wonderful staffs of the Traverse City Commission on Aging and Meals on Wheels for making it possible for Mary to remain in her home during her last years. She loved their visits and the care they provided . She was so happy to have been able to remain in her home until her death. We also want to thank Simone for being such a wonderful friend to both her and our family. A private family memorial service will be held.
