Virginia Walker, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in Jupiter, FL on Thursday, September 22, 2016. Born on March 8th, 1928 in Denver, Colorado, she was a devoted, loving mother and wife. She graduated from Emma Willard School in 1946 and then received a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University, followed by a Masters in Letters from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Masters of Arts and Teaching from Oakland University.
She was a member of the First Congressional Church in Traverse City, Michigan, the Traverse City Country Club, Riverbend Country Club, as well as the Tequesta Country Club. She loved to teach and retired as a professor from Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. She was a 'snow bird,' having traveled between Florida and Michigan for many years, she always considered Traverse City her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. (Jack) Walker, whom she married on July 17th, 1954, and her mother Lillian (Ray) Irwin. Virginia was the loving mother of two children, her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Walker and Michael Nelson of West Palm Beach, Florida, and her son, John Walker, of Sopchoppy, Florida. She is survived by three grandchildren, Angel Walker and John Nelson of Florida, and Anna Bean of New York, as well as her great-grandson Caden Delacruz. She is also survived two cousins, Louise Bergstrom and Nancy Graves.
There will be a memorial service to follow in the summer of 2017 in Traverse City, Michigan.
