Mary B Zographos

August 14, 1929 — April 25, 2017

Mary Zographos passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017 in Royal Oak, Michigan, after a brief illness. She was born in Petoskey, Michigan, August 14, 1929 to the late George and Stella Batsakis. She had a twin brother, the late John Batsakis. Mary attended Petoskey schools and was an outstanding student as well as a beautiful young lady.

The Batsakis family was well known in Petoskey for their wonderful restaurant, "The Arcadia" (now the Circus Shop) on Mitchell Street. Her father was a very popular man in town, active in several service clubs. After high school, Mary worked at the First State Bank, first as a teller and later as an assistant manager.

When Mary transferred from First State Bank to a branch bank in Detroit it took time for patrons to realize they would no longer hear her calm, caring voice and sincerity to assist those who required guidance with their concerns. She was sorely missed by co-workers and faithful clients. These sentiments were echoed by her many friends in Detroit.

In June, 1951, Mary married the love of her life, Athan Zographos, a basketball coach, mathematics teacher, and golf pro. They were married for 62 years. Mary and Ace moved to Royal Oak about 1961 when Ace became a coach and math teacher for the Berkley School System. Mary continued to work in a bank in that area and later became a branch manager of the bank.

Mary was a devoted Christian. She trusted God and all that he brought to her life and was always a very caring person towards others. She was very generous and had a loving heart. She will be missed by all those who knew her and cared deeply for her. After Ace passed away she was very grateful for all the help and support she received from her wonderful neighbors and caregivers.
Mary is survived by her two nieces, Sharon Batsakis of Tucson, Arizona, and Laura Hansen of Warrenton, Virginia, her nephew and his wife, George and Colleen Batsakis of Middleburg, Virginia, her sister-in-law, Mary Batsakis of Warrenton, Virginia, her numerous cousin's children, and the wife of Dimitri Drivas, Elizabeth Drivas.

A Funeral Service will be held at Archangel Gabriel Greek Orthodox Church in Traverse City on May 2, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., with a viewing on the evening of May 1, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Father Ciprian Streeza presiding. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Archangel Gabriel Greek Orthodox Building fund are appreciated.
