BATTLE CREEK — Matthew Paul Moyer, 26, lifelong resident of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, in Battle Creek.Matthew was born Dec. 2, 1985, to Kathleen (Wight) Moyer, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.Matt attended Traverse City West High School and was a member of the 2004 graduating class. From a very early age, Matt took an interest in the military and service to his country. Only a year-and-a-half following graduation he was enlisted as a member of the United States Army.Matt completed basic training at Ft. Benning, Ga., and was stationed in New York when he answered the call of duty and proudly raised his hand, volunteering, to fill the need for soldiers in Iraq. During his service overseas, Matt was injured due to a rocket propelled grenade. Even after his injuries he continued to serve, doing what he could and flew drones to assist in the military effort. Returning home, Matt continued to support others volunteering as a part of the VFW Honor Guard and helping with breakfast at the Cherryland Post. Matt proudly and honorably gave of himself as a member of the 10th Mountain Division of the United States Army.In early years, Matt's outgoing nature allowed him to enjoy soccer, Boy Scouts, and develop his passion for cars and trucks. Matt could often be found working and tinkering on the many mechanics of a vehicle before fulfilling his dream of becoming a solider. Matt will be remembered by many for his generous nature and service to all.Matthew is survived by his loving family: his children, Scott and Makynzie; his mother, Kathy Moyer, of Traverse City; one sister, Carrie (David) Egan, of Chicago; his grandmother, Reta Wight, of Traverse City, and grandfather, Byron Wight, of Oklahoma City; and many other loving family members and friends.Matthew was preceded in death by his great-grandparents.Visitation for friends and family will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Trinity Lutheran Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Robert M. Zagore will officiate. The Rev.
