Mavis Beverly Furlong, 87, of Traverse City, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Boardman Lake Glens with her loving family at her side.
Mavis was born on May 16, 1935 in Ironwood, MI to the late Arvid Noak and Ida Olivia (Riutta) Fors. She married Paul Douglas Furlong, on July 12, 1958 in Birmingham, MI. Mavis attended the University of Michigan on a full academic scholarship, where she enjoyed sorority life, as an Alpha Omicron Pi, and where she met Paul, her husband of 64 years. She began her teaching career in Birmingham, Michigan, while working on her Master's degree in Education.
Mavis enjoyed sailing, tennis, golf, and spending time walking the beach at the cottage. In later years, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, and the piano. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, The League of Women Voters, and Director of the Girl Scouts in Southern, Michigan. After retiring from teaching, she owned and operated an answering service, called The Front Office.
Mavis was a beautiful soul, who exuded sunshine and shared it unconditionally with everyone she met. She always put others needs above her own. She brought joy and laughter wherever she went. Her kind and loving soul will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Surviving Mavis is her husband Paul, her daughters Jenifer (Fred Page) Green, Heidi (Jon) Thomas, Heather (Jason) Furlong-Fukumitsu along with many friends and extended family.
Per Mavis's wishes cremation will take place. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the ASPCA. Her family is being cared for by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
